Born 8 October 1813, in Inverugie, Morayshire, Scotland, and trained locally by Lady Gordon-Cummings of Gordonstoun, Alexander Webb was known as a topographical painter. He migrated to Australia by 1853, with his wife and eldest daughters following in 1855, and they settled in Geelong. Whilst Webb earned his living as a house painter and grainer, he spent his leisure hours painting the local landscape or Scottish scenes from memory. Acclaim for his artistic ability came later in life. He exhibited at Victoria Academy of Art from 1872 and in the Melbourne Intercolonial Exhibition. His work was the subject of a retrospective exhibition at the Geelong Art Gallery in 1989-90.
