Born in Scotland in 1859, John Perrett studied at the Glasgow School of Art, and arrived in Dunedin, New Zealand in about 1886. He opened the private art school, the Otago Art Academy in 1894. Perrett moved to Auckland the following year and taught painting there. He exhibited with the Otago Art Society, the Auckland Society of Arts, the New Zealand and South Seas exhibition of 1889-1890 and the St Louis Exposition in 1904.
