Born in Melbourne in 1925, David Newbury is the son of artist, Albert Newbury (1891-1941). He studied at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology where he later became a part-time teaching instructor from 1955 to 1959. He also lectured at Bendigo Teachers College and Melbourne Teachers College between 1959 and 1963. An abstract and semi-abstract painter, and later an impressionist landscape painter, he exhibited in Melbourne from the from c1960.
