Born in Hobart, 1919, Jean Bellette studied under Julian Ashton in Sydney, and later under Meninsky and Gertler in London and Paris. A modernist painter, she was awarded the Sulman Prize 1942 and 1944. She exhibited in 1953 at the New Burlington Galleries, London, organised by the Art Council of Great Britain. She lived in Majorca, Spain from 1957 but frequently visited and exhibited in Australia.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $17,835 for The Mourners, C.1970 sold by Bonhams in April 2021.
