Annie Gates was born in Sebastapol, Victoria in 1867 to William Gates and Emlyn Flemming. She lived in the Melbourne suburb of Surrey Hills for much of her adult life. Gates was a member of the Society of Women Painters and Sculptors Inc. and is mentioned in "More Than Just Gum Trees" by Juliet Peers, published by Dawn Revival Press in 1993. One of her exhibitions was with Maria Holgate, a student at the National Gallery School between 1886 and 1892, in 1936.
