Born in Germany of Australian parents in 1909, Bryans arrived in Australia as a child. She studied in Melbourne under William Frater, and in Paris at La Grande Chaumire. Principally a landscape and abstract painter, she was represented at the exhibition of Australian art which toured the USA and Canada in 1941. She exhibited at Georges Gallery in 1948 and 1966 and in group exhibitions from 1937 to 1995. She was a member of the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors, and the Independent Group.
