Frederick Frith was a painter and professional photographer. He worked in the UK as a painter and professional photographer before emigrating to Australia, working from a studio in Collins Street Melbourne from the early 1850s. He was a committee member of the Victorian Fine Arts Society and at their exhibition in Melbourne, in 1853 he showed a number of portraits and a large oil painting and the following year exhibited six works. The following year he moved to Hobart and advertised as a portrait and animal painter but later produced large panoramic photographic views around Hobart. He moved back to Melbourne in 1862 advertising himself variously as 'Professor of Painting', 'chromatype artist' and 'photographer and painter'. He also painted an oil portrait of the governor of Victoria, Sir Henry Barkly, exhibited at the 1866 Melbourne Intercolonial Exhibition. Sands & McDougall’s Melbourne Directory lists him as a teacher of painting at Collins Street East in 1870 and 1871, the latter the year he died.
