Sydney Long, painter, etcher and teacher, was born in Goulburn, N.S.W. on 20 August, 1871. he studied at the Sydney Art Society of N.S.W. school, (later renamed the Royal Art Society) under A. J. Daplyn, Frank Mahoney and Julian Ashton, from about 1892-96, and in London, under Malcolm Osborne in 1910. From 1913 he exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and began to practice etching. After 15 years in London he returned to Sydney in 1925 to become a leading figure in the Australian art world, particularly in the field of etching. He painted and etched pastoral subjects and stylised the Australian bush as a subject to which he introduced mythical creatures, as well as birds and foliations borrowed from European Art Nouveau.
