Liz Maw was born in 1966 in Wellington and grew up in Taradale. She completed a Diploma of Visual Arts at the Eastern Institute of Technology Hawkes Bay in 1995, and a Master of Fine Art at the Elam School of Fine Arts, Auckland, in 2002. She lives and works in Auckland and is known for her extremely large-scale portraits that blend hyper-realism with fantasy. Her work has been exhibited in Auckland Art Gallery and City Gallery Wellington and she exhibits commercially in Auckland.
