Gavin Hurley was born in 1973 in New Zealand and graduated from Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland in 1998, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting. He is a full-time artist based in Auckland and has exhibited nationally and internationally in private galleries as well as public art institutions. He mostly works with oil on canvas, oil on linen and collage on paper, creating whimsical portraits in subdued grey and blue tones.
