Born in England in 1843, Margaret Thomas arrived in Australia as a child in 1852. She studied under Charles Summers and in England and Europe. A portrait painter, sculptor and writer she exhibited sculptures in Melbourne from the first exhibition of the Victorian Society of Fine Arts in December 1857. left Australia in 1867 to live in England and Italy. She exhibited portraits at the Royal Academy and published several books.
