Born in Melbourne in 1899, William Ricketts was a self-taught sculptor and conservationist. Well known for his terracotta figures, often based on Aboriginal subjects, he owned a property at Olinda in the Dandenong Ranges, now known as the William Ricketts Sanctuary. This property is famous for its bush garden heavily decorated with his terracotta sculptures.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $17,925 for Self Portrait with a Group of Aborigines sold by Christies in October 2004.
