Born in England in 1823, Frederick Weld sailed for New Zealand in 1843. Initially a sheep farmer, he became a leading member of government, and in 1864 he formed a ministry, but he stayed in office only a few months. In 1867 he returned to England and later became Governor of other colonies. As was usual for gentlemen of the period, he was an artist in his spare time. He painted watercolours and these are represented in several public collections.

Since 1970 we have recorded only one work being sold at auction by this artist, which was in 1993.
