Born in Scotland in 1829, John Adamson is believed to have arrived in Hobart in 1835 off the wreck of the Wallace. A painter, sketcher and draughtsman, Adamson also spent some time in Sydney and Melbourne. Engravings of his drawing, Melbourne from the South Side of the Yarra Yarra 1839 acclaimed for its accurate representation have been widely reproduced. Adamson died in 1902 on board a ship bound for Calcutta. His works are represented in a number of institutions including the National Library of Australia, Canberra.
