Charles Basil Norton was born in 1887 at Worthing, Sussex, England. He joined the Royal Navy in 1902 at the age of 14 and served at various shore establishments and ships before purchasing himself out of the Royal Navy in 1911. He had visited Australia many times while in the Royal Navy and returned there on his discharge where he re-united with, and then married his Australian girlfriend in 1913. With his new wife, he moved to Gisborne, New Zealand where they stayed for 7 years before returning to Australia. He lived in the Sydney suburb of Chatswood and worked in various shipping positions until the 1920s when he was employed as as a newspaper and magazine illustrator and writer. While in the Royal Navy he taught himself to draw and kept a daily journal describing shipboard life, coaling, collisions and comments on navy life. He was a watercolour painter of maritime subjects, particularly shipping, throughout his life, with paintings in many collections in New Zealand and Australia.
