Born in England in 1918, Clifford Last studied briefly at the City Guild School of Sculpture and Hammersmith Schools in London. After moving to Australia in 1947, he also studied at the Melbourne Technical College, but regards himself as largely self-taught. Principally a sculptor and wood carver, he had his first solo exhibition at Georges Gallery in Melbourne in 1948 and continued exhibiting regularly. A retrospective of his work was held at the National Gallery of Victoria in 1989-90.
