A New Zealand artist, Tony Fomison was born in Christchurch in 1939. He studied life drawing and sculpture at the Canterbury School of Fine Arts from 1956 to 1960, and attended life classes in the early 1960s. Fomison became known mostly for his neo-expressionist paintings and prints made after 1961. After a three year visit to Europe, he moved to Auckland in 1973, where he was influenced by Polynesian culture, which found its way through to his paintings. Fomison was the inaugural recipient of the Rita Angus Residency in 1985.
