Len Greening was born in Bristol, England. He left school at the age of 12 after his father was killed in France during World War I, and the following year to help support family. He worked in a munitions factory, then became an apprentice machinist. At the age of 20 he commenced studying art at the West of England Academy. He moved to Australia in 1924 and continued studies under Dattilo Rubbo at East Sydney Technical College, while working as a commercial artist. He served in an overseas based Survey Unit during World War II. From 1934-1956 he was a member of the Sydney based Northwood Group of artists whose members included Roland Wakelin, Lloyd Rees, John Santry, George Lawrence and others. Len was keenly interested in theatre - drama, opera and ballet and a board member of the Hunters Hill Historic Society and the Art Advisory Committee of Hunters Hill Council. He revisited England in 1962 and studied art at the Heatherley School of Fine Art (London) and portrait painting under Charles Dring. He had paintings selected for hanging International Art Show (London). Len had successful solo show in Sydney 1966 again in 1979, in Adelaide 1970 and Christchurch 1971.
