Born in Meckering, Western Australia in 1926, Brian McKay decided to pursue career as an artist from a young age. He is known as an abstract-expressionist painter and although he had no formal art training he was invited to join the 'Perth Group' with artists such as Guy Grey Smith and Robert Juniper in 1961. He lived and worked in Greece from 1964 to 1975 and on his return taught painting and printmaking at Perth Central TAFE for 20 years. The Art Gallery of WA held a major survey of his work in 1982.
