Born in 1869, Janie Whyte studied art at the National Gallery School in Melbourne, and etching with John Mather. A painter, etcher and woodcarver she taught art at private schools, as well as painting landscapes city scenes and flowers in oils and watercolours. She exhibited with the Melbourne Society of Women Painters & Sculptors, the Women's Art Club and at the Atheneum and Sedon galleries.
