Born in England in the 1820s, Ford exhibited at the Royal Academy prior to his arrival in Australia. He was a member of the Victorian Academy of Fine Arts and taught Rupert Bunny early in his career. An oil painter, his Ausralian work mainly depicts rural scenes on the outskirts of Melbourne. His best known work is Picnic Party at Hanging Rock (near Mt Macedon which inspired the book by Joan Lindsay.
