Piera McArthur was born in Ramsgate, England where her New Zealand surgeon father had been studing and practicing. The family moved back to their native New Zealand in 1938. She studied at Victoria University Wellington where she was awarded a Master of Arts in Modern Languages with First Class Honours. A figurative painter, she lived in numerous international cities with her diplomat husband prior to returning and settling in Hawkes Bay.
