Richard Lewer was born in Hamilton New Zealand in 1970. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Auckland School of Fine Arts in 1992 and studied at the Victoria College of the Arts at the University of Melbourne in 2000 where he was awarded Master degree in Visual Arts. He works with a variety of media including steel aluminium, sheepskin, sandpaper, pegboard, laminex, and concrete. Since 2009 he has exhibited extensively in Auckland Melbourne Sydney Canberra and Adelaide with venues including the Ian Potter Museum of Art in Melbourne, the Art Gallery of South Australia and the Fremantle Arts Centre. Richard Lewer was the winner of the Blake Prize for Religious Art in 2014 and the Basil Sellars Art Prize in 2016. He lives and works in Melbourne.
