Born in England in 1825, artist and engraver Charles Terry was educated in Switzerland and travelled to Australia in 1852, settling in Sydney. He painted the local area, usually in watercolour. He was an examiner at the Sydney Mechanics School of Art, and was employed with the 'Sydney Illustrated News'. In 1859 'Australian Keepsake' was published with reproductions of 40 of Terry's paintings in Sydney.

The total number of works by Charles Terry offered for sale by auction since 1970 is 88, of which 50 (57%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $34,160 for Sydney Harbour, c. 1853 sold by Bonhams in June 2015. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by Charles Terry are held by the Queensland Art Gallery, Art Gallery of NSW and Art Gallery of Western Australia.
