Born in Queensland in 1937, Mervyn Moriarty studied at Central Technical College, Brisbane. In 1971, he founded Flying Arts Alliance, first known as EastAus Art School. He also founded the Brisbane Institute of Art (BIA) in the same year. He retired from Flying Arts in 1983. Amongst his prizes and awards, he was a finalist in the Art Gallery NSW Dobell Prize in 1999 and 2001, a finalist in the Art Gallery NSW Sulman Prize in 1972 and 1997 and the winner of the Captain Cook Bicentenary Art Award, Queensland in 1970. he has been exhibiting since 1962, mainly in Brisbane but also Melbourne, Sydney and regional centres.
