Born in England in 1833, William Hodgkins was a lawyer and self taught watercolourist. After working in Paris, he travelled to Melbourne in about 1858 and then to Dunedin in 1860. He became an influential leader of the New Zealand art scene, giving lectures on publishing articles and arranging sketching trips. He was a founder of the Otago Art Society in 1876 and was its president for the first eight years. He also organised the building of the first Dunedin Art Gallery. Hodgkins was the father of two well known New Zealand artists, Frances Hodgkins and Isabel Field.
