Born in Sydney, NSW in 1936, Jim Olsson studied art at East Sydney Technical College. He worked in publishing and advertising in Australia, Asia and North America, returning to Australia in 1972 and, in 1988, held his first one man show in Brisbane. In 1993 QPAT sponsored a one man show which toured nationally and internationally. Since 1993 there have been numerous mixed exhibitions (including Amsterdam in 1995 and United Kingdom in 1999) over thirty-six one man shows in Australia and overseas. In recent years he has been exploring the creative process through digital art.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $1,610 for Ted and His Boat sold by McKenzies Auctioneers in December 2005.
