Painter, natural history illustrator, commercial artist and art teacher, Margaret Flockton was born in Sussex, UK on 29 September 1861. She studied at the South Kensington Art School, London and at Miss Gann's Life School in London. In 1881 she emigrated to Australia with her sister, Mrs Boulton, their parents joining them later. She worked as a commercial artist for seven years then opened a studio in central Sydney. She exhibited with the (Royal) Art Society from 1894 -1901, showing wildflower studies and still-life painting in the Society's exhibitions. She worked for 5 years preparing the illustrations for The Critical Revision of the Genus Eucalyptus written by J.H. Maiden, Director of the Botanic Gardens and Government Botanist, the first part of which was published in 1910. She published a book of paintings of Australian wildflowers in 1908, the illustration of which were also published as large lithographs and postcards. In later life she wrote and illustrated children's books.
