Born in New Zealand in 1933, John Waterhouse arrived in Australia in 1949 aged 16. He was awarded a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Melbourne but had no formal art training. However he undertook study tours to the UK, Europe and China in 1979, 1988 and during the 1990s A semi- abstract painter, he exhibited widely in the Melbourne area in group and solo shows. He has held curatorial positions at the Monash and Latrobe University art galleries in Melbourne.
