Born in Sydney in 1923, Margaret Cilento grew up in Queensland and studied in Brisbane and Sydney. She received a Wattle League Scholarship in 1949. In the late 1940s, the Cilento family moved to New York for a short period. Here Margaret studied abstract expressionism. She returned to Australia in 1951 exhibiting her abstract expressionist paintings in Brisbane and Sydney. In 1954 she returned to London for further studies, returning to Australia with her husband in 1965 and settled in Brisbane.
The earliest auction listing we have for Margaret Cilento is in 1975 and in total 14 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 12 (86%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $2,530 for The Dressing Room sold by GFL Fine Art in November 2022. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by Margaret Cilento are held by the National Gallery of Australia, Queensland Art Gallery and a further two major public national galleries (see list below).
