Bour in America in 1858, William Smedley studied at the Pennsylvania Academy and under Jean Paul Laurens in Paris. A painter and engraver, he came to Australia with F B Schell and W C Fitler to work on the production of the 'Picturesque Atlas of Australasia'. On his return to USA he won a number of art prizes.
