Born in Melbourne in 1931, Charles is a grandson of Frederick McCubbin (1895 - 1917). Painting in watercolour, he was an entomological and botanical artist and a businessman in Melbourne. He exhibited in Melbourne, from 1962 to 1980 at Joshua McClelland Print Room and Australian Galleries, and in group shows in London and Pittsburg. He wrote and illustrated two books on butterflies and was instrumental in the establishment of the butterfly house at Melbourne Zoo c1975. A retrospective of his work was held at the Gippsland Art Gallery, Sale in 2010.
