Born in London, 1959 Matthew Browne studied painting Camberwell College of Art in London and later obtained a BA (Honours) from Elam Schoool of Fine Art, University of Auckland. During 1998-99 he was drawing and painting lecturer at the Chelsea College of Art & Design, London. He moved to New Zealand in 1991 and became Master of Fine Art program supervisor at the University of Auckland Whiteclife College of Art and Design, Auckland. He was also a drawing and painting lecturer at Artstation Toi Tu - Community School in Auckland. In 2005 he was the joint winner of the ‘Peoples Choice Award’ at The Wallace Art Awards and in 2009 was awarded a ‘Merit’ for his painting 'Wonder' at the New Zealand Painting and Printmaking Awards in Hamilton. He has consecutively been selected as a finalist in the annual Wallace Art Awards since 2000.
