Born in Melbourne in 1921, Ailsa O'Connor studied at the Melbourne Technical College and George Bell Schools. A high school teacher, she first exhibited drawings and paintings in 1942 at an 'Anti-Fascist' exhibition in Melbourne. She married artist, Vic O'Connor, and became a political activist, joining the Communist Party of Australia in 1944. In 1962 Ailsa O'Connor studied sculpture and began exhibiting in 1975. During the 1970s, she travelled, exhibited, wrote and became involved in the feminist movement.
