Born in England in 1812, George Hamilton arrived in Australia in 1833. A painter in ink and watercolour of bush and sporting subjects, his illustrations were published in the Journals of both Grey and Eyre. He also published three volumes of his own works. A foundation member of the Adelaide Club, he became South Australian Police Commissioner in 1867. He retired from this post in 1883.
