Born in England in 1932, Michael Illingworth arrived in New Zealand in 1951 and had a number of occupations in Tauranga, including photography and fishing. In 1957 he returned to Europe to study art. By 1961 he was back in New Zealand and had become a full time artist in the naive style, exhibiting regularly. In 1966 he became the first Francis Hodgkins Fellow at Otago University. From 1975 onwards he continued to paint but participated in few exhibitions.
