Born in Newcastle, New South Wales in 1872, Robertson studied at the London Polytechnic, Westminster School and the Central School of Arts. A painter and etcher, he worked in Scotland and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1905. On his return to Australia in 1912 he settled in Dee Why, Sydney. He exhibited his etchings at the Royal Art Society and became president of the Australian Painter-Etchers' Society.
