About William Robinson
Born in Brisbane in 1936, Bill Robinson studied extensively in Brisbane, and after graduating, he began working as an art instructor, eventually becoming head of the Painting Department at the Brisbane College of Advanced Education in 1982. In 1989 he retired to work as a full-time artist. Although he held his first exhibition in 1967, it wasn't until the 1980s he rose to international prominenece. A semi-abstract painter in several mediums, he was the winner of the Art Gallery of New South Wales Archibald Prize in 1987 and 1995 and the Wynne prize in 1990. In 2011, the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) Art Museum held a major retrospective exhibition of his works.
Bill Robinson is one of the most prolific of the artists listed in our database, with the number of works offered for sale by auction since 1986 of 526, of which 353 (67%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $696,000 for Landscape with Sunset and Self Portrait sold by Sotheby's in May 2007. This year 2 works have been offered for sale.
