Born in Brisbane in 1936, Bill Robinson studied extensively in Brisbane, and after graduating, he began working as an art instructor, eventually becoming head of the Painting Department at the Brisbane College of Advanced Education in 1982. In 1989 he retired to work as a full-time artist. Although he held his first exhibition in 1967, it wasn't until the 1980s he rose to international prominenece. A semi-abstract painter in several mediums, he was the winner of the Art Gallery of New South Wales Archibald Prize in 1987 and 1995 and the Wynne prize in 1990. In 2011, the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) Art Museum held a major retrospective exhibition of his works.
