These and two other works were inherited by the daughter of Augusta Macdougall, the proprietor of Pakie’s Club in Elizabeth St, one of Norton’s bohemian haunts in mid-century Sydney, and now form part of her estate. Continuing the pagan theme are a bronze Piping Pan (Lot 72 ) and an earthenware bust, Pan (Lot 73 ) by the hard to find but well respected sculptor and potter, Loma Kyle Latour. A student of Rayner Hoff, she was an important and unconvential personality of the 1930s, who apart from artistic endeavours was also recognised as an actor, model and writer.

Davidson Auctions Estate & Collector weekend sale has a substantial art component, featuring several interesting, themed collections. Rosaleen Norton, the eponymous Witch of Kings Cross, subject of a recent biopic, is represented by two outstanding early examples. Witch’s Vortex (above) (Lot 66 ) and The Dream (Lot 67 ) with an old pencil title on the back.

In a more traditional vein, there are thirty seven works centred upon Sydney Harbour Bridge, and later, the Opera House, consigned by well known Sydney radio identity and avid collector, Jim Haynes OAM. Feature works present a chronology beginning with Percy Lindsay: The First Pylons - Construction of Sydney Harbour Bridge (Lot 2 ), through John Allcot’s classic view Sydney Harbour Bridge from Botanic Gardens (Lot 13 ), and all the way to a striking Reg Mombassa boomerang Harbour Bridge nocturne, No Shame No More (Lot 33 ).

A group of Cayley family works will be of interest to the bird enthusiasts, headlined by two good works by Neville Cayley Senior: Bone of Contention (Lot 80 ) showing two magpies squabbling over a bone; and a harder to find subject, Lyrebird (Lot 81 ). Neville Cayley, Junior (Lot 84 ) and a modest Alice Cayley (Lot 86 ) are also represented.

The auction runs over two days, with Australian & International works, tribal and indigenous, as well as a group of 1950s and 1960s travel posters coming up on Saturday May 20th; with Asian pictures featured on Sunday 21st. The Sunday sale also comprises decorative arts, silver and jewellery.
