The appeal of International Art Centre’s Collectable auction reflects the popularity of this sale: an event at which seasoned connoisseurs and budding collectors alike converge to appreciate one of the most eclectic and diverse offerings available to the market. Among the auction highlights are works from the Estate of David Eade, musician, with fresh to market examples by Douglas MacDiarmid, Piha II (Lot 55 ), Helen Brown, Hauraki Gulf (Lot 54 ), Olivia Spencer Bower, Untitled (Lot 51 ) and John Drawbridge, Seated Women (Lot 57 ).

International Art Centre’s first Collectable Online auction for 2024, will be closing on 13 February 2024 and feature an outstanding selection of mid-century and contemporary works by leading New Zealand & International artists. Included in the sale is Illingworth’s iconic Tawera As Adam and Eve (Lot 37 ), estimated at $50,000 - 70,000, which was exhibited in Barry Lett Galleries 1965, Illingworth: An Exhibition of Recent Works.

The appeal of mid-century paintings continue with the inclusion of British artist William Henry Allen. Recruited as part of New Zealand’s La Trobe scheme, whose intention it was to improve the quality of art education, Allen had a profound effect on the development of New Zealand art. His teaching of early modernism opened the door to an avant garde post-impressionist period in New Zealand's art history. A selection of works including a series of female portraits (Lots 44 – 47) and remarkable landscape compositions such Lake Scene (Blue Loch) (Lot 43 ) feature in the latter part of the sale.

Of note in the sale is a vibrant acrylic and watercolour painting by British-born New Zealand artist Michael Illingworth. Incorporating the artist’s personal mythology and love of nature, the composition, Untitled (Lot 30 ) offers collectors the opportunity to acquire a rare gem for their personal collection. Also included in the current sale is Illingworth’s iconic Tawera As Adam and Eve (Lot 37 ) which was exhibited in Barry Lett Galleries 1965, Illingworth: An Exhibition of Recent Works.

Of note in the sale is a selection of outstanding limited edition prints & lithographs which will undoubtedly attract collector interest. Notable works include Dick Frizzell, Red Haring VII (Lot 25 ), Max Gimblett, Highway (Lot 24 ), Richard Killeen, Untitled 1969 (Lot 8 ) and two outstanding large scale screenprints by Paratene Matchitt, No 9 0f 10 Guitars & No 8 of 10 Guitars Suite (Lot 19 - 20) on offer.  

The auction will be on view at International Art Centre’s Parnell premises, 202 Parnell Rd, until auction day, Tuesday 13 February.
