Born in Sydney, New South Wales in 1925, Harold Lane spent his childhood in the Queensland bush. Lane studied at the East Sydney Technical College and began his formal art training under F. J. Martyn-Roberts in Brisbane. He was a painter of stylised landscapes and held several successful one-man exhibitions and won several awards including the R.N.A.prize (twice). He was commissioned to paint a mural of about 4 metres x 1.5 metres by the Commonwealth Government for the Law Courts Building in Darwin.
