Born in New South Wales in 1930, painter and sculptor Lovett sStudied East Sydney Technical College and with artist and teacher G K Townshend initially on watercolours and later oil paintings. He was an Associate Member of the Royal Art Society of New South Wales and Official Artist to the Snowy Mountains Authority from 1950 to 1968. He became known for his outback Australian themes, especially with horses and cattle, but later diversified into a wider variety of subjects including the human figure and city scenes. He has travelled extensively, and painted from many exotic locations in Asia, Europe, America, the Middle East and the Pacific Islands. He has held numerous solo exhibitons since 1963 in Australia, the USA and Dubai. A number of his paintings have been presented to foreign parliaments by the Australian Government.

The total number of works by Robert Lovett offered for sale by auction since 1976 is 153, of which 117 (76%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $1,725 for The Drovers sold by Davidson Auctions in August 2009. This year one work has been offered for sale.
