Born in Melbourne in 1919, Gray Smith studied under Max Meldrum. A painter and poet he exhibited with the Contemporary Art Society in 1945 and later with the Museum of Modern Art. He married the artist Joy Hester and in 1961 moved to Canberra where he exhibited paintings and jewellery. He later became a stained glass designer.
