Born in 1850, in Bradford, Yorkshire, and arrived in Melbourne in about 1873 with the aim of becoming a full time artist. In 1884 he was commissioned to paint 14 scenes of bush life which were donated to the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery. In 1888 two of his paintings won 3rd awards of merit in the Melbourne Centennial (International) Exhibition. He was a prolific painter, able to work in oil and watercolour or gouache, depicting landscapes and bush scenes. His works are represented in several public and private collections. James Turner Turner died unexpectedly of heart disease on 13 April 1908 at Canterbury, Victoria.
