Born in Sydney in 1920, James Carson Coleman studied at Sydney Art School, racing bicycles to earn prize money so he could pay for his art tuition. In the 1960s, he travelled to Western Australia so he could paint the Australian outback, living out of a caravan with his second wife Margaret and their four children. Paintings were sold to station owners, whose landscapes he had painted. He was a member of the Royal Art Society..
