Mary Alice Evatt (née Sheffer) was born in Iowa USA in 1898 and came to Australia while quite young. She studied architecture at the University of Sydney, and prominent art schools in both Sydney and Melbourne during the 1930s. She married in 1920, however her career was overshadowed by that of her husband, Herbert Vere ‘Doc’ Evatt, deputy leader of the Labor party under Ben Chiefly, President of the United Nations during the peace process after World War II, and later Justice of the High Court of Australia. When travelling overseas with her husband she studied in New York and Paris and continued to study and work right up until her death in 1973. For Mary Alice Evatt, her art was a place of peace where she could remove herself from the everyday turmoils of a politician's life. In 1943 she was the first woman member appointed to the New South Wales Art Gallery Trust. A retrospective exhibition of her work was shown at the National Trust S. H. Ervin Gallery in Sydney in 2003.
