Born in 1833, George Turner arrived in Christchurch in 1855 after serving with the Turkish contingent in the Crimean War. He had a number of clerical jobs with government departments, and later was commissioned to design the Arms of the Canterbury Agricultural Association. Many of his paintings were copies of photographs of Lyttelton taken by a Dr Barker in earlier times. Turner exhibited in the South Island from 1881. His work is represented in the Canterbury Museum.
