Born in the Netherlands in 1912, Aart van Ewijk studied in Amsterdam and later in Iran, Afghanistan and India. A semi-abstract style painter, illustrator and author of children's books as well as a professional musician, Aart Van Ewijk arrived in Australia in 1951. He exhibited in Sydney and Canberra from 1960 to 1982. In 1958 he was a finalist in the Art Gallery of New South Wales Sir John Sulman Prize. He received the Chancellor's Award from Macquarie University in 1976.
