Peter Smets was born in 1962 in The Netherlands. He studied at the Maastricht Art School from 1978 to 1984 and travelled and studied in Europe in 1984-85 before migrating to Australia in 1986. He exhibited in group shows from 2000 and his first solo show was in Sydney in 2005. Since then he has held 17 solo shows in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and the Gold Coast to 2019, and participated in 43 group exhibitions in the same cities. He has undertaken five study and working tours to cities in Europe and Asia, and to New York. He has been a finalist in the Art Galley of New South Wales Sulman prize in 2012, a finalist in the Art Galley of New South Wales Wynne Prize in 2014 and a finalist in the Tattersall's Club Landscape Prize in 2019. Peter Smets lives and works on the Gold Coast.
