Born in 1948 in Melbourne, Joel Elenberg had no formal art training and took up painting soon after finishing school in 1962. He travelled to the Middle East in the mid-1960s and held his first exhibition in Melbourne in 1969 at Australian Galleries followed by another in 1971. He also exhibited in Sydney in 1978 and 1982 and in Brisbane in 1979. Elenberg's career as an artist and sculptor was tragically cut short with his death in Bali in 1980, aged just 32.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $1,135,227 for Mask 1 (1978) sold by Smith & Singer in August 2023. This year one work has been offered for sale.
